David M. puts forth this for discussion; if interest is shown,
then it will be initiated as a new topic in the forum:

Does anyone who was around in the 1950s, or early 1960s, every remember being pinned down, or sat on by my their contemporary girl friends?  I was wondering whether anyone has had the delicious experience of being ‘face-sat’ under layers of rustling multi-layered full circular stiff net petticoats? What are their memories and have they had similar experiences recently?

Chiffon:

Echo de la Mode magazine 23 Jun 57 (translation  below picture)

TRANSLATION BY MIKEL:

 Playing with Materials...on a Model

As you  know well, the model of a dress will produce quite different effects according to the material the model is made of. You have seen one exemple
in a previous ECHO OF FASHION magazine issue which proposed a draped dress made of either crêpe, jersey, silk or wool.

Similarly, the dresses you see in this article are built from the same pattern applied to four different materials, each of them bringing in its own characteristics  (namely : nylon, organdie silk, twill silk and chiffon).

We have built three of these dresses using natural silk. The beauty of this material, a very many possibilities it offers were perfect to get the various effects we expected.

In addition, we decided to play on (and increase) the characteristics of each material with differently-shaped petticoats.

• The first  dress model  is made of nylon the aspect of which  is simply charming. Nylon is a light material, rather bouffant; the flounces of the dress are well-proportioned, properly located; they flare evenly from top to bottom.

  • The nylon petticoat is rather stiff; it is composed of a flat yoke on the hips, well-adjusted by means of  darts. This petticoat  features  a tier with loose-fitted darts set at a lower level than the first (top) flounce of the dress (see the white printed dress).

 • The second dress is made of a blue organdie silk, it creates a more bouffant look. Its skirt has a much more flaring structure, as if sustained  by a
blowing gust of wind.

Matching the dress, an organdy petti is built with a flat adjusted yoke, on which are sewn two tiers with loose-fitted darts. Each tier is assembled at
the same levels than the flounces of the dress  (see the blue extra-flared dress)

• The third dress is made of printed twill silk. This material is heavier, softer than silk or nylon, offering a steeper, falling look and in another interpretation is sustained by a crêpe satin sheath petticoat down to the bottom flounce of the dress. Right at its bottom, the petti is made up of a full
stiff nylon tier with loose-fitted darts. That little trick gives the dress a quite different silhouette (see the printed yellow dress).

• Another model dress: made of  grey chiffon used in double layers; this material is still softer than twill. Extremely fluid in its texture, the chiffon must fall naturally all along your body. It is worn upon a grey satin sheath, very close to your body (see the blue dress, bottom right).

To end it up, when you plan making a dress or a gown, test different materials, weigh their texture, try them on, before making a decision.  Then,
comparing them to the pattern you have selected, figure out (with the welcome help of a nearby shop attendant) which material will  provide you with
the best expected outcome.

The materials here described are from the Rodin Company

Addendum to yesterday, regarding Mary Janes, from Ruffles:

"I forgot all about mentioning soles on dance shoes.  Here is my comment: Some are thin and soft, some are doubles, some can come with outside soles, and some should be worn indoors only.  It is important to check.  Swing shoes have very sturdy soles (obviously) and are often skid resistant. Tap shoes can sometimes come without taps, with removable taps, with semi-permanent taps, and new models almost always with a rubber strip behind the front tap that could be removed by a cobbler (keeping the taps on can be fun to, but a bit slippery).  Ask friends online about sizing and experience."

Tessy is sad to report that Pammie, friend to many, dear friend of hers, and avid supporter of The Pond, has passed away.

September 10, 2007, of liver cancer - she was 59.

While Tessy is  not free to be specific, suffice it to say that Pammie was quite a talented and accomplished individual in 'drab
(real) life,' and those who had the privilege of knowing her will miss her dearly.  It hurts to know she will no longer be around.

All one can say is, "Rest in Peace, Sweetie.  You followed your dreams."

Addendum:  Pammie was also known as Miss Susan MacDonald, proprietor and editor of Petticoat Discipline Monthly.

A REMEMBRANCE FROM  ERIN ~~

We met for the first time, at Camp II,  on a chilly November afternoon for lunch. From the start, I knew Pammie was a special person.
She impacted my life profoundly from that time on with her  keen, brilliant mind and embracing attitude.

It was my impression of her that she was the true living personification of what the Golden Rule is all about. Never a cross word from her
lips, or a rude inconsiderate response, with her arms reaching out to everyone in her who knew her.

One of Pammie's loves was trains. We had a long conversation about the Lehigh Valley railroad's famous "Black Diamond" . Pammie was
amazed that I had traveled on this line as a young child and she always wanted to leave Camp to sojourn to the base of operations in Mauch
Chunk, Pennsylvania. Pammie frequently dropped me a line via the Net to see how I was recovering from my long illness, never once mentioning
her own pain and discomfort. I am glad to have known her and will miss her laughing grin. Pammie, honey may you rest in eternal peace - you
earned your place in Heaven.

Having collected quite a few worthy video contributions, we are devoting this Update to them; we
try only to include one, at most, per day, but we have a few backed up. Seems an appropriate time...

Home video - 50s dancing

Sissy Dahli:   A promo for a dance instruction video

Many of youPoufies were helpful with the Mary Jane query, but Ruffles' response seems
the most exhaustive and comprehensive:

First, visit the Goody 2 Shoes website, especially the shopping tips section.  There is often a discussion in one of the sections
on finding Mary Janes. The favorite MJ there seems to be from Muffy's, very good quality.
Second, do a web search for commonly available styles and brands.  For starters, try 'Ballare', a band shoe.
Third, visit Zappos, Nordstroms, or other large suppliers (including eBay) and search for 'Mary Janes,' a style currently very popular.  Wide feet can be made happy at Torrid.
Fourth, search for ballet flats at shoe sites or on the web.  They are similar and are easily modified
Fifth, check dance suppliers for character and tap shoes.  Some of my favorites are the Capezio C3800, Bloch Tap On, Bloch Merry Jane, and various tap-ties.  Most now can only be ordered with taps, but that can be modified by a cobbler and sometimes a supplier.  Character shoes have no taps.  A good resource for links is the TapWeb

Sixth, visit square dance or swing dance suppliers such as Ginny's Promenade online.  You can find makes like Aris Allen and TicTacToe.
Seventh, visit some of the exotic shoe suppliers and weed through the extreme shoes.  My favorite is the adult schoolgirl shoe
(has 2" heel, but is quite classic in shape).  Search for 'school girl-50.'

///Most of the mentioned sources supply shoes up to US women's 12. Some larger.  This is only a start.  This style shoe is everywhere.
If you can cross the barrier, there are more in Japan, Mexico, Germany, and Portugal.///

Bo Persson:

"I was watching a programme today Tuesday called This Morning; they were showing fall fashion. To show something posh, they brought
in two numbers from Christian LaCroix - he has done a collection for La Redoute (UK). The last number was a red coat, and . I got wild
when I first saw it - it looked like a skirt blouse. The male presenter made fun out of the lower part of the coat (knee-length). 'How can
it stand out like that?" The 'fashion expert' answer was that she had put some tulle underneath to make it look nicer. Last week, another fashion talk in another programme: Wide skirts with petticoats. 'Petticoats makes you keep warm and nice during the cold winter.' I
believe we have a winner here?

Tessy:  Seen it all before, haven't we?  Never gets to the common woman's level.  Guess Tessy is cynical.

In the past, over time, the below site was pointed out by severalPoufies, and Tessy rejected the idea of posting it because, at the time, "trashing the gown" included burning and destruction, and she felt it disrespectful to an article of clothing which should be honored and preserved.  Recently, 'Lingerie Lover' pointed out the site again, and when Tessy rejected the notion, he pointed out that 99% of the images were of gowns being some how introduced to water.  This appears to be a change from the site as  she originally saw it, so,
because there ARE a number of Poufies out there who love wet brides (and other pettis), Tessy changed her mind:

Shelley came up with this vidclip of June Allyson - anyPoufie know from which movie it came?

A coupleofPoufies said it came from The Glenn Miller Story (1953), but Tessy is pretty familiar with that film, and does not believe so. The most reasonable input comes from Ann (below), especially since Harry James is not listed in The Glenn Miller Story cast (while Gene Krupa and Louis
Armstrong are - why would Mr. James be left out?:

Ann: "I think that video clip is from Best Foot Forward (1943).  According to the Internet Movie DataBase, that is a flick that had both June Allyson
and Harry James in it. The uniform he's wearing looks like WWII."  However, The Glenn Miller Story took place before and during WWII as well, so that means nothing.

Serena: "I'm not sure, but I think the June Allison clip is from Two Girls and a Sailor (1944). If not, the only other film June made with Harry James
is Best Foot Forward. The sound in the clip is truncated, so I couldn't identify the tune.

It is rather poignant and will affect many who view it -

Several Poufies have written to identify it as an excerpt from The Christine Jorgensen Story (1970).  Trent Lehman played George (her given name) at seven years of age.  Poufie Christine adds that, in truth, he never did this and the scene was added for dramatic effect.

Aunt Claudette writes:

"Here's something for your blog just in case your readers think petticoating a little boy is just so much fantasy that never really
happens nowadays.

"About thirty-five years ago, when I lived in a town in the east side of Massachusetts, I was in a Dunkin Donuts shop, sitting in a
booth having my coffee.   Diagonally across from me two young women that I knew were talking.   One woman was telling the other
about how she loved to dress her little ten year old boy like a girl.

""I bought him a page boy wig to wear with bangs on his forehead.  Once I put him in a pretty dress with a bouffant slip under it
and some panties, he looks so cute,' said the boy's mother.

"'It sounds like fun,' said the other woman, 'but you really shouldn't be doing that to him.'

"'Oh, I know,' said the boy's mother. 'But you should see what a pretty little girl he looks like.   I put a bow on his hair and some lipstick on him too.   It's so much fun, and he likes it too.'

"'How often do you do this?' asked her friend.

"'Almost every night after we have supper,' she replied. 'Sometimes in the morning, and he stays in with me all day.   I first
started doing it two years ago when he was eight years old.  He looks forward to it now.'

"Her friend warned her again about possible bad effects it might have on him later when he was older.

"'I suppose you might be right,' said his mother. 'But it's hard to not want to do it.  He really does make such a cute little girl.'

"Then they began to talk about other things and I saw them leave a few minutes later.

"I never heard what happened to the boy later when he was older.  Perhaps he visits Petticoat Pond now?"

Joe A. sends this 'petti-enhanced' version of Diana Dors
in I Married a Woman. (1958).  Tessy is generally reticent to post these types of enhancement, but Joe wrote, "Look at it this way: This is the sort of item Diana would have been wearing in the 1950s ("Value For Money").  Modern technology just helps to reveal it!"

What do youPoufies think?

Is this something we want to continue?

Elaine Flowers responds to yesterday's entry regarding ballroom dance gowns:
"I know exactly the emotions shown by the Poufie who likes the old style tulle ballroom dresses. They just seem to have disappeared
from Earth!  I've tried all ways to try to find out where they all went with the object of purchasing, and I've still not got a clue after
25 years of searching. Also, the BBC's Come Dancing program ran in that genre for many years, but the only footage I know of it is in
the video I have previously highlighted on The Pond. So another question is, 'Where has all the film gone?' I tried the BBC and they said
it was either destroyed or taped over. SHAME I say!!!

Tessy: Conspiracy lurking there!

A Poufie was looking at a picture of ballroom dancers from the '70s, and a thought occurred
to her:
What happened to all those gorgeous old gowns, with their hundreds of yards of tulle? Surely they weren't all thrown out. How come there are never any for sale on eBay? Does anyPoufie know where one can get the genuine article?

"Is there any view more enjoyable for a petticoat aficionado than to see a GG wearing a frothy petticoat and playing with it at the same time?  The answer is YES!!   When petticoat aficionados can see a whole dancing ensemble of GG's wearing fun, full, and frothy petticoats while smiling, laughing and playing with their petticoats, all while dancing!

Lucky Aunt Claudette reminisces about her jobs in the 50s:

"When I was in high school, I had a part-time job during the school year, and it was full time during my summer vacation.   I was a stock
boy and also worked in the shipping & receiving department of a department store in New England.  At the time, petticoats were the fashion rage.   Part of my job consisted of bringing newly arrived petticoats and other lingerie out to the women's and girls' departments.   Needless to say, it made a lasting impression on me.

Half of the day, I'd be hanging petticoats and bouffant slips and regular full and half slips on display racks, and panties, garter belts, corsets, nylons, etc. on tabletops divided into bins according to size and small counter top racks.   I'd also be hanging up new dresses for women and girls on taller racks.

For someone that found petticoats so fascinating, the job was like a dream come true.   Most of the salesgirls were dressed in the bouffant style while they worked.

One in particular was a well constructed sexy sort of gal that ran the makeup counter.   Like most of the women working in the store,
she dressed in the bouffant style. The rumor around the store was that she had seduced one of the department heads into having an
affair with her, and travelled with him on the store's buying trips to NYC.

Later I got switched to the housewares department in the basement where the much older saleswomen didn't wear petticoats.
But women customers coming down the stairs to get to housewares offered a good view of their petticoats.   If ever there was a style of
lingerie meant to be seen, it was petticoats.

Every now and then, I'd be told to work in the window display department which was run by a guy who was clearly gay; there were two younger straight men who worked with him. They didn't just make the window displays, but also dressed the mannequins for the windows and other mannequins in the dress and lingerie departments.   Setting up displays in these departments was also a fun experience.

The owner of the store was a nice little old Jewish man, and his two sons were both vice presidents and buyers of the company.   A
couple of years later, I switched to working in another department store  in the same town.  Its departments, displays and merchandise were the pretty much the same as the other.

Actually, the very first job I had while in high school was an after school job working in a huge mill outlet store in 1955.   I can still remember the many long racks of petticoats in the store arranged side by side with a narrow aisle between them.   Part of my job was to take a count of the petticoats on each rack, noting which rack, sizes and colors were needed.   I was 15 at the time, and being a part-
time worker, the store only had to pay me 65¢/hour.  But stocking the racks with petticoats more than made up for my low pay."

"Here's an excerpt from an email I just received from a female friend, Dora, with whom I've stayed in touch with over the years,
and who knows my tastes from the days when we
went out. I'm just pasting it in:"

"It turns out you aren’t the only fan of big skirts and petticoats; I hired an outfit for a fifties night last month and it was a case of 'down boy, down!'
all evening from several sources. The other gals on our table got the same thing. Anyway, the petticoat thing became a topic of discussion at our table for quite a while, and none of the girls could remember any of their other evening clothes getting such a reaction, although one reported a schoolgirl costume coming close. By the end of the evening we all agreed (men too) that living in the fifties could have been pretty exciting. Certainly dancing
was much more fun with a big skirt swirling round your waist. Yes it did make me feel horny - and rather alluring too! "

Tessy: So...if this is the way many gals think, well, what are they waiting for? WE can't wear them out!
