David M. puts forth this for discussion; if
interest is shown,
then it will be initiated as a new topic in the forum: Does anyone who was around in the 1950s, or early
1960s, every remember being pinned down, or sat on by my their
contemporary girl friends? I was wondering whether anyone has had
the delicious experience of being ‘face-sat’ under layers of rustling
multi-layered full circular stiff net petticoats? What are their memories
and have they had similar experiences recently? |

Chiffon: Echo de la Mode magazine 23 Jun 57 (translation below picture)
TRANSLATION BY MIKEL: Playing with Materials...on a Model As you know well, the model of a dress will produce quite different effects according to the material the model is made of. You have seen one exemple in a previous ECHO OF FASHION magazine issue which proposed a draped dress made of either crêpe, jersey, silk or wool. Similarly, the dresses you see in this article are built from the same pattern applied to four different materials, each of them bringing in its own characteristics (namely : nylon, organdie silk, twill silk and chiffon). We have built three of these dresses using natural silk. The beauty of this material, a very many possibilities it offers were perfect to get the various effects we expected. In addition, we decided to play on (and increase) the characteristics of each material with differently-shaped petticoats. • The first dress model is made of nylon the aspect of which is simply charming. Nylon is a light material, rather bouffant; the flounces of the dress are well-proportioned, properly located; they flare evenly from top to bottom.
• The second dress is made of
a blue organdie silk, it creates a more bouffant look. Its skirt has
a much more flaring structure, as if sustained by a Matching the dress, an organdy
petti is built with a flat adjusted yoke, on which are sewn two
tiers with loose-fitted darts. Each
tier is assembled at • The third dress is made of
printed twill silk. This material is heavier, softer
than silk or nylon, offering a steeper, falling look and in
another interpretation is sustained by a crêpe satin sheath
petticoat down to the bottom flounce of the dress. Right at its
bottom, the petti is made up of a full • Another model dress: made of grey chiffon used in double layers; this material is still softer than twill. Extremely fluid in its texture, the chiffon must fall naturally all along your body. It is worn upon a grey satin sheath, very close to your body (see the blue dress, bottom right). To end it up, when you plan
making a dress or a gown, test different materials, weigh their
texture, try them on, before making a decision. Then, The materials here described
are from the Rodin Company |

Addendum to yesterday, regarding Mary Janes, from Ruffles:
"I
forgot all about mentioning soles on dance shoes. Here is my
comment: Some are thin and soft, some are doubles, some can come
with outside soles, and some should be worn indoors only. It is
important to check. Swing shoes have very sturdy soles
(obviously) and are often skid resistant. Tap shoes can
sometimes come without taps, with removable taps, with
semi-permanent taps, and new models almost always with a rubber
strip behind the front tap that could be removed by a cobbler
(keeping the taps on can be fun to, but a bit slippery). Ask
friends online about sizing and experience." |

In the past, over time, the below site was
pointed out by severalPoufies, and Tessy rejected the idea of posting it
because, at the time, "trashing the gown" included burning and
destruction, and she felt it disrespectful to an article of clothing which
should be honored and preserved. Recently, 'Lingerie Lover' pointed
out the site again, and when Tessy rejected the notion, he pointed out
that 99% of the images were of gowns being some how introduced to water.
This appears to be a change from the site as she originally saw it,
so,
because there ARE a number of Poufies out there who love wet brides (and other pettis), Tessy changed her mind: www.trashthedress.com |

Shelley came up with this vidclip of June Allyson - anyPoufie know from which movie it came? A coupleofPoufies said it came from The Glenn Miller Story (1953) , but Tessy is pretty familiar with that film, and does not believe so. The most reasonable input comes from Ann (below), especially since Harry James is not listed in The Glenn Miller Story cast (while Gene Krupa and LouisArmstrong are - why would Mr. James be left out?: Ann: "I think that video clip is from Best Foot Forward (1943). According to the Internet Movie DataBase, that is a flick that had both June Allysonand Harry James in it. The uniform he's wearing looks like WWII." However, The Glenn Miller Story took place before and during WWII as well, so that means nothing. Serena:
"I'm not sure, but I think the June Allison clip is from Two Girls

Lucky Aunt Claudette reminisces about her jobs in the 50s:
"When I was in high school,
I had a part-time
job during the
school year, and it
was full time during
my summer
vacation. I was a
stock Half of the day, I'd be hanging petticoats and bouffant slips and regular full and half slips on display racks, and panties, garter belts, corsets, nylons, etc. on tabletops divided into bins according to size and small counter top racks. I'd also be hanging up new dresses for women and girls on taller racks. For someone that found petticoats so fascinating, the job was like a dream come true. Most of the salesgirls were dressed in the bouffant style while they worked.
One in particular
was a well
constructed sexy
sort of gal that ran
the makeup
counter. Like most
of the women working
in the store, Later I got switched to the housewares
department in the basement where the much older saleswomen didn't wear
petticoats. Every now and then, I'd be told to work in the window display department which was run by a guy who was clearly gay; there were two younger straight men who worked with him. They didn't just make the window displays, but also dressed the mannequins for the windows and other mannequins in the dress and lingerie departments. Setting up displays in these departments was also a fun experience. The owner of the store was a nice little old
Jewish man, and his two sons were both vice presidents and buyers of
the company. A Actually, the very first job I had while in
high school was an after school job working in a huge mill outlet
store in 1955. I can still remember the many long racks of
petticoats in the store arranged side by side with a narrow aisle
between them. Part of my job was to take a count of the petticoats
on each rack, noting which rack, sizes and colors were needed. I was
15 at the time, and being a part- |

The other gals on our table got the same thing. Anyway, the petticoat thing became a topic of discussion at our table for quite a while, and none of the girls could remember any of their other evening clothes getting such a reaction, although one reported a schoolgirl costume coming close. By the end of the evening we all agreed (men too) that living in the fifties could have been pretty exciting. Certainly dancing was much more fun with a big skirt swirling round your waist. Yes it did make me feel horny - and rather alluring too! " Tessy: So...if this is the
