Information from this site, found by Mike F.

Petticoat

Undergarment worn as an underskirt beneath a skirt or dress. It is generally made of silk, satin, or synthetic fibres.
Derived from an old French term petit cote, a petticoat was originally a man's undershirt but by the Middle Ages it had become a woman's padded undercoat. As the undercoat was replaced by the chemise, the petticoat became an underskirt that was tied round the waist with ribbons or tapes. Abandoned in early 19th-century dress, it was reintroduced in the 1840s, often made of linen, cotton, muslin, or other light fabrics, although heavier and warmer fabrics tended to be used in the winter. The popularity of the petticoat has declined during the 20th century although it was briefly popularized by Ralph Lauren in the 1970s and later by Vivienne Westwood with her ‘Buffalo Girl’ designs.

"Here is a curious Brazilian TV soap.  One of the story lines involves a boy who has been brought up as a girl (for convoluted reasons
hardly worth explaining).  As a teenager he is beginning to realise that he is not like the other girls.  Someone has helpfully strung
together all his scenes in a series of YouTube videos.

"In Part 2 we get a glimpse of petticoat around 3:44.  We can also see just how thorough the costume department were!  Apparently in
this scene the boy is describing a strange hot feeling down below."

Belinda comments on the Gardetanze picture posted yesterday:

"My friend Annette is from Germany and had been a member of a Gardetanz group for a couple years when she was younger...  I
asked her about that (She knows of my "hobby" and is a supportive friend!)...Anyway, she said that on occasion a boy would perform
with those troupes, kind of as comical relief, or for fun...  Much like we have boys in this country who sometimes perform as girl cheerleaders for powder puff football games and homecoming hijinks...  She said she is unaware of any boys being permanent full time members of these Gardetanz groups, but like I mentioned, she knows some boys HAVE performed with them once in a while...perhaps
a brother or friend of one of the girls.  Anyway, those few lucky boys who have experienced wearing a lovely Gardetanz costume must
have some amazing tales to tell!"  (Tessy: To say the least!)

Mfmam:

"I'd like to share this Gardetanz photo, along with one question that has been troubling me... Does a dancer on the far right in the front row appear to be a boy in a full Gardetanz uniform with appropriate makeup?

He certainly looks a bit taller than the rest of the ensemble. And not a bit less proud to be a part of the team than any of them!  I'm sure that the only apparent flaw in his appearance - the lack of nylons - would be taken care of in his next on-stage performance."   [CLICK TO ENLARGE]

Tessy:  We had a similar discussion about possible boys in another such photo a short while back.  Perhaps it is common practice?

"I am looking for vintage Seventeen magazine covers dating from the year 1965. I
recently acquired a vintage prom dress that was the featured prom dress for Seventeen
and graced the cover in an early spring issue of 1965. It would mean the world to the
original owner to have a copy of the cover. I saw The Pond's picture from Seventeen in
April 1965, but the dress I have is full-length, and not the bouffant cocktail length more common to the 1950s. The dress was worn with a crinoline underneath, so the skirt would
have been fuller. The owner said she is almost certain it was on the cover, and she knows it was the prom dress for 1965. Please let me know if you can provide any information. Thank
you so much for your assistance - I truly appreciate it.

P.S. If it helps, the dress is ivory chiffon over ivory satin with iridescent threads in circles designed over the bodice."

"Welsh commercial channel 4 (S4C) runs a program on Thursday's at 1830hrs entitled Retro where a rather pretty female presenter
picks a family and they open a time pod (Pod Amser) and in the pod is a date (say from 1955-1959). The presenter then proceeds to
dress the family in the clothes of that randomly selected era!  Not seen the 50's programs as yet but the 1860-1865 episode was good, although its was in Welsh and I only understand a little (Siarad Cymraeg dippen bach = I speak a little Welsh)."

Tomas points to this Pantene ad vidclip, which features a nicely petti-ed young lady!
Ken writes:

"You already have this one up in the magazine ad section, including the version I sent giving info on the famous photographer Paul Horst. Here's a nice version on a site devoted to him and his work. Nice bio and other info, including this photo which is titled 'Round The Clock.' That's the name of the nylons in the ad. I guess this photo was made by him for that ad. Nice to get a clean copy here."

Not sure if we posted this vidlink from Beth before, but, even if so, it worth a second shot:

Little girls 'n' petticoats a winning combination
"What could be cuter than a little girl in a full, flouncy petticoat? It's the ultimate ensemble piece for the pint-size set — especially if you're dressing ..."

BOOK REVIEW: Becky Thatcher
"... about women being “home waiting with the other women, with the children, hobbled by yards of skirts and petticoats” while momentous things were afoot. ..."

Linda points to this rather interesting, but oddly-worded 'eBay guide' dealing with petticoats.
The first paragraph declares that there is some kind of petticoat 'craze' sweeping the world (were it so!  ... although there certainly
is a certain amount of haute couture interest these days), and proceeds from there, ending the article with the word 'fad' (perhaps
the writer is attempting to 'hype' her sales).   Nonetheless, there IS information here.

Darling Annalai writes:

"The charm bracelet is back again! I guess many have seen them already.  By the 1950s, the charm bracelet was a must-have accessory
for girls and women. Well I have my own charm bracelet, and looking at charms I would like to have I found this cute tutu one. I have
seen it for real but not bought it yet and it does look better then on the pictures. So now even if I can not wear a petticoat daily I can
at least wear one on my arm."

"Have you checked out the Brian P Dougherty page?
There are heaps more videos there - I've saved at least a dozen. You've especially gotta check out Moira's B-Day 1957;
I would kill to have been at that party, OMG, all those lovely little dresses...I just wish I was a young girl in 1957!"
